Easter Learning Week Day 1

IMG_2856.jpg

It’s Easter Week and our official Spring Break for the kids. I wanted to keep the learning easy and fun this week so I typed up bunch of random activities and stuffed them into Easter eggs. Inside each stuffed egg could be a math problem perfect for our different ages (1st, 3rd and 5th), there might be a fun way to get their body moving like Just Dance, sit ups or bike rides or it could be a family activity such as play a game with Dad or Mom. Some special eggs have extra special awards like cooking with Mom, 1 hour free of Minecraft in Education or extra “Mom” bucks for a special chore. Here are a few examples of our stuffed eggs.

Our Family Egg Activity was Money Math Review. So if you are looking for a fun way review the concept of coins, check out our videos.

“A Penny equals 1 cent. A nickel equals five. A dime equals ten cents. A quarter .25”

Now Grab a hundreds chart and use this visual.

“A penny walks, a nickel Hops, a dime slides, a quarter flies.”

Consider using sidewalk chalk to draw coins and rides bikes to add amounts called out.

Mystery Teacher 3rd Grade Takeover

I’m working on area with my bunny.

I’m working on area with my bunny.

Today we had a mystery teacher who talked about culture. She taught us what to wear, what the huts looked like and how to carry water. She also told us to look for mosquito larva because it’s really cool. Oh and the place she was talking about is in Africa in a country called Cameroon.

Also, my mom and I did something silly today. Hahaha

Treasure Hunt 5th and 3rd Grade Blog Takeover

mapreading2.jpg

Can you guess what we did today? Just by the title? Well, today we went on a treasure hunt for chocolate coins. Using a compass and a map we located four key points and searched for buried treasure. It was kind of cold outside so we had to move fast. Did you know you have to orient the map to read it correctly and determine which way is north? I also learned how to read the symbols on the map and how to choose the right path (because there could be brambles, ouch).

mapreading.jpg

When we arrived home we also practiced different math skills. With a tape measure we determined the perimeter and area of different surfaces in the house. We also used plates to make a giant clock on the floor to practice time for my brother. My sister used the same plates to skip count while she practiced multiplication.

So, my Mom saw this weird post online that talked about spirit week for the quarantine. Can you believe when I came down stairs this morning she was wearing a Christmas shirt and ELF ears. She can be so weird sometimes.

Field Trip!

pondlife2.jpg

After learning all about life at the pond from scholastic resources for distance learning, we took a trip to the pond across the street. Can you guess what we saw?

We saw baby tadpoles! Just hatching from their eggs. It was terrifying and majestic at the same time. I certainly did not expect to see frogs being born. I just expected a few minnows, but I guess when you look closer you can see amazing things. Thats all for now, Bye!

Dem' Bones

IMG_1769.jpg

Dem’ Bones

Today I had a wonderful terrific time. I constructed a skeleton out of paper, and we watched a video called “Dem Bones” Lyra and Cayden could NOT stop singing it. Later on, we did some arts and crafts that our art teacher gave us. To explore skeleton’s further we explored many ZSpace applications. Then, we had a magnificent time having a scrumptious Dinner. Finally we went to bed, witch was my favorite part.

Day 4 Assigned Homework

Assigned Homework

by S. Lucero 5th Grade Blog Takeover

Today, I spent my whole time playing I-pad. Just kidding. This morning I HAD to do school work that my teachers assigned, then me and my family went on a bike ride that I found enriching (Not true). Later on I created a farm on Minecraft education edition. Finally, my mom made me re-check my work. Turns out I forgot to do two math assignments. Math isn’t really my style. For math I had to take a video on Flipgrid for a problem. How I solved it. Anyway that’s all for now. Bye! [Lyra, can I have some Ice cream? I’m starving.] [Your still typing you know.].

While I had to finish my work, my sister and brother learned all about farms through Scholastic called , “Quack, Quack, Giggle” and explored zSpace Midwest Farm region. They also helped me build a farm on Minecraft Education. My brother had to record what he saw out the window. It’s kind of cool we can still wear our pjs to school right now.

Day 3: It's All about Music and Measurement

Today was all music and measurement!

By S. Lucero (5th Grade)

scholastic and zspace.jpg

‪Today, our grand lesson was fractions for math, extraordinary music, excellent cooking, outstanding movie making, and perfect construction (On Minecraft). We used a zSpace Laptop to learn more about musical instruments. Scholastic has daily lessons that help my little brother and sister practice reading and gives us themes for the day. One of my 4th grade teachers gave us a pile of books to read since we packed up all our books for the move. I’m most excited to read, “The Indian in the Cupboard”. Mom and I are going to read it together. She says it’s spectacular & magical.

Corona School Day 2

leprechaun .jpg

Secrets to the UNIVERSE!

Juvenile attack, I’m taking over Mommy’s Blog for a daily Corona School Update. We used to call it Ms. Crimsion’s Academy. However, there has been a slight change in policy and since I’m the boss, new management is taking over the blog. Today I began my day by eating breakfast. Then I wrote a screen play for school. This screenplay may or may not have happened in this time period. It’s basically about three children who are part of a secret organization and they need to stop the world from being taken over by an evil demon called, “Corona” (sound familiar ?). Anyways, you have to read the script to read the rest, I don’t want you stealing my ideas now.

Next we tried a science experiment but Mom messed it up by dipping her fingers into the control container. So our colors didn’t blend into a rainbow. Next I wen’t to Minecraft Education Edition and made a rainbow out of beckons. Then I made a farm, an underground system and exquisite garden as well as an ice skating rink with snow golems. That’s all for my day, what did you do?

School through Social Distancing Day 1

work from home.jpeg

Anyone else feel like it’s been literally a month since last Thursday,Friday and Saturday when social distancing was announced? I’m sure many of you, like our family went from daily school schedules to homeschooling planning overnight. Anyone feel overwhelmed? How many of you are just considering extra spring break and not working on any school. Who thinks this is going to blow over in a couple weeks and we will be back to school in no time? With so many emotions and stress facing our nation and our school children let’s just a pause and see what we can do to help. Just imagine the seniors this year facing the last year of their high school with graduation they’ve worked so hard for potentially canceled. Or how about the college kids who had to pick up and leave their campus and adjust to online only. Challenge is an understatement. I’m on the other side of the fence, with my three kids all in elementary school, I worry that they will have the skills needed to be ready for subsequent grades.

So what can we do with limited supplies? What can we do around work schedules and plans that have altered overnight? Can we stick to a schedule? It’s time for a plan and the simpler the better.

Each one of my grade level teachers sent some amazing activity guides. There is a wealth of knowledge all over the web offering an abundance of activities for younger grades. So what did we choose to do:

work from home 2.jpeg
  1. Read!!! Read!!! Read!!!

  2. Write a Story- to make this easy adapt a story idea to help generate an idea. ie: Did you just read Diary of a Spider? Have them write Diary of a Dragon or choose any animal to research and create. Amazon has blank books already pre-made or grade some printer paper to create your own books.

  3. Incorporate some online, digital skill. So, if you wrote about spiders, discover more facts and into online.

  4. Explore the world around you. Get our and MOVE! Crawl like a spider or see if you can local a spider outdoors.

  5. Move through math or practice your basic facts. Multiply through movement. Toss the ball back and forth to solve facts. Dribble the ball while practicing skip counting. Just have fun!

  6. Then, consider making a journal or diary to wrap up the day.

This was our day in a nutshell. I was able to get some work and a workout in. But, let’s see how tomorrow goes. Hopefully we can blog our adventures in home schooling tomorrow! Current mode, building Leprechaun Traps!

Musings on Minecraft in Education

IMG_5407.jpg

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written a blog post. But goodness do I have exciting news! First, we signed a contract for Zombie Mombie with Atmosphere Press! How exciting is that?! I’m pumped and we are excited to see our second book in print. Meanwhile while Rodan+Fields continue to grow, I’ve taken on more roles as an educational consultant with Education Collaborators. This past fall I was trained to be a certified Minecraft Educator and this winter I added ZSpace to my portfolio and am working on becoming certified in Kano. So what does all this mean? I get to get in the classroom working with teacher and adding new, exciting technology to the classroom. But how and why did I get started?

By now you know my passion for education and finding unique ways to blend literacy into the classroom. Well, when you find incredible programs that do just that, it’s marvelous how much you come to life when brought into the classroom. So, for this particular post I’ll focus on Minecraft then in future posts you will hear more about ZSpace and Kano.

Last spring, as I prepared to teach a class in Florida Microsoft Teams, they had also requested Minecraft. I know what you are thinking, gaming in the classroom, what on earth?! How could this possibly be beneficial. But, I was hired to teach so I figured, I better get to learning and fast. So, I took the classes online and studied my little heart out to get as much experience as I possibly could so I would be comfortable in this online world. So imagine a non-gamer such as myself, entering the virtual world in Minecraft. My little head bobbed along with my avatar as I struggled to move forward, back and switch the tools in my inventory. Survival vs creative, forget it, I was just trying to navigate moving forward and literaly running into walls. “HEEEELLLLP”, I called out to my resident experts (my three kids). Y’all that’s when it began. I saw a shift on my role as an educator. No longer was I ever going to be the subject matter expert in this field. That role was already happily taken by the children. My role needed to shift to facilitator and guide to create lessons thereby using the Minecraft worlds as tools to solidify understanding. By the time I arrived in Florida, I was more comfortable with Minecraft then Team thanks to the help of my young subject mater experts. LOL

Fast forward to this fall as I drove down to Charlotte to become a certified teacher of Minecraft. Already I had explored world after world, training and awaked an understanding that went from reluctant learner to embracing the technology world of gaming. Minecraft was a catalyst not only for gaining cool points with the kids at school (because let’s be honest when you teach Minecraft you’re dang cool) but also giving me a whole new perceptive on how to engage learners in a different plane of understanding. You can create a digital citizenship with 21st century skills. Science, chemistry, math, literacy social studies, coding you name it, Minecraft has a world for that, a digital environment that classes interact together, work with one another, solidity learning and discover a whole new set of skills. Technology isn’t going away, we need to empower our student through the digital world. So why not embrace and learn how this will work to your advantage.

4E503D8C-7005-4700-82FA-DD5405011C3D.JPG

So are some of you thinking, “ya, great but I don’t want the kids one the computers just playing all day”. It’s so not that and it never should be. Minecraft or any digital tool isn’t a replacement, It’s an enhancement. It’s a tool that can be used very effectively. Just like your classroom you need to set boundaries, create lessons and utilize the tools in the game for accountability. Yes, we do have ways to do all of that! As certified trainers, that’s our job to help you understand the bells and whistles of the game, to get you comfortable being in the virtual world and to help you understand how to create a digital environment. Teachers are encouraged to learn with their students how to read, study, plan and block out projects before they even enter into virtual Minecraft to get an idea how they will work together to build and design fluidly. I’ve been in the virtual world as I act like the buffoon, breaking blocks left and right and stumbling about. What’s amazing to me is how the kids all cluster and help to fix my “mistakes” working together seamlessly. That teamwork and cohesiveness was so wonderful to see. Accountability, we have it! With ink & quill notebooks, portfolios, camera and creative designs you will love the worlds students build!

I challenge you to reach out to your tech team, ask them about the possibility of bringing in Minecraft to the classroom. I encourage you to explore the world and who knows, I may end up traveling to be your trainer (don’t be surprised if I show up in elf ears).

Mango & Date Bites

IMG_1660.JPG

Tomorrow school starts for our littles and we’ve prepped their lunches with few goodies to make the transition easier. My oldest was asking for some cookies made with her favorite treat, Dates. So we concocted this sweet treat.

Mango & Date Bites

  • Handful of Cashews

  • 1 cup oatmeal

  • 6 pitted figs

  • Handful of dried mango

  • 1 Tablespoon Honey

  • 1 tsp baking powder

Place the above ingredients into the blender until it creates a flour substance. Then mix in the following:

  • 1/2 cup Eggwhites

  • 1/2 cup cashews

Use a cookie drop or spoon to place about 20 cookies into a slightly greased cookie sheet. Cook in a preheated oven at 400 degrees about 15 minuets.

End of The World

Minecraft in Education!

The new features are awesome!

Research, study, design and develop with Minecraft in Education. Recorded and Edited by 10 year old SL. "I've been really wanting to see the end of the world. I'm going to research how to get there and Pratice".

Our oldest is inquisitive and devours books. When she gets a hold of something, she wants to discover all she can about that topic. It’s been amazing to watch her mind develop. With that in mind as I explore and play with the new Bata Platform with Minecraft in Education, I’ve been able to watch my kids take off and fly as we try and explore the new options available for the classroom. Imagine taking an idea that that you’ve been wanting to see if it will work such as “what are the tools needed to create a portal and find the Enderdragon.” That’s what we’ve been doing as we explore Beta Mode. On her own she researched, drew out a plan and then preformed it as we watched. She also recorded her work, edited her video and added music. Creativity at it’s finest! I can’t wait to see what happens in the classroom as other children start to explore Minecraft in Education! Does your school have Minecraft? How do you use it in the classroom?

Humming Bird Haven

IMG_0558.jpg

Migration Season for Hummingbirds has arrived. Our our little area of North Carolina we are directly in the Ruby-Throated’s path making it a perfect opportunity to interact with they tiny marvels. Weymouth Woods, a local nature preserve allows visitors an up close and personal interaction. One of only two trained hummingbird banders, this lovely lady is filled with incredible knowledge on everything hummingbird from feeders to migration patterns and how to identify juvenile to adult birds.

Our three kids were lucky enough to witness a demonstration of the tagging and banding process and each got to release a “winged Jewel”. This FREE event was as enchanting as it was educational. The kids and I highly recommend attending a local even near you. Make sure to go early, the hummingbirds were more active before 10:00am.

Afterwards we took a stroll along the trails to explore more tiny marvels. Weymouth Woods also has the best interactive discovery room for kids. A giant stage of puppets, an underground tunnel and unit boxes of discovery, your kids will fill the morning with memories.

Do it Scared!

IMG_0817.JPG

Why I was scared to say “YES”.
Over three years ago, I took a HUGE leap and I’m not going to lie, I was terrified. I was scared I would
1. Get flack from my family and....I did.
2. Ridiculed by other Friends for not choosing “their” company and...I did.
3. Struggle at first and... I did.
I had fears just the same as any other person but I just had a gut feeling that R+F was different and... it is! Now:
1. My family does support, encourage and believe in me! Why because they saw my eyes light up, they saw me putting it the work and making money!
2. The friends and community I’ve established through my journey is just incredible. I love my tribe.
3. That struggle, that turned into success! Day by day I continued to put one foot in front of the other and put in the work. I believe in the system, believe in myself and Believe in the process!!
Why did I think Rodan+Fields was so different? I saw a story after story of people succeeding with this company! I thought, well if they can do it and I just want a little extra money, then why not? Here’s what I focused on:
✅ A huge support group with my company
✅ A business that I didn’t have to stock inventory.
✅ safe, consumable products with results that work!
✅ A company that continues to innovate and be THE BEST
✅ A company that’s just starting to go global and continues to appeal to everyone with skin.
✅ skin care that’s not just “a one-size fits all” with options for everyone!
✅ A job that I can do on my time so I can do what I love: be with my kids, support my husband, enjoy writing again, TRAVEL have a shameless shoe fund and just have FUN!

That little paycheck has grown all and for that I am so incredibly grateful! For all of you, thank you! I am so grateful for the support and encouragement!

Is it time for you to take the leap of faith? Talk to me about your fears I’m here to listen, and encourage!

*this is my unique story. For more info search R+F IDS

Self Care or Mad Scientist

IMG_0374.jpg

This photo right here 😆
uh...Mom what’s on your face! A bubbling fizz-popping rejuvenating treat for me, a mad scientist experiment for them.

These three right here, this is why I R+F! This is why I took an alternate route to a paycheck. This is what gives us freedom!!

My babies are watching what I’m doing. I see them grabbing the sunscreen to care for their skin. I see them recognizing the importance of self-care. I see them emulating me as I wash my face and hydrate my skin.

For my babies and the importance of self-care: Wash you face, eat healthy foods, exercise, take care of your beautiful body God has blessed you with. You are beautiful, you are worthy! You are blessed! You choose your own path and there are so many incredible choices for you! Be strong, be courageous and believe in yourself!

Travel Journal with a Twist

10 Year old S took a unique spin on her travel log through England. This summer the kids and I have been exploring the new beta Minecraft world exploring the new features and planning different ways to use in the classroom. One of the most exciting elements of the accessibility tools is the Immersive Reader in Minecraft for Education. Immersive Reader is a tool that will improve reading comprehension and increase reading fluency for young learners. We welcome you to enter a world where confidence and decoding straggles will be strengthen. Emerging readers will be encouraged to develop higher level literacy skills while at the same time providing a safety net for learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Just consider the possibilities for your students will the Microsoft’s Immersive Reader!

England Top 10 from an 8 year Old

IMG_0141.JPG

England Trip Top 10

by Middle L.

Here it is! Part two of the London England Top 10 through the eye of our middle girl (8 year old). Do you have little kids traveling to London? Grab your cup of coffee, be inspired and get ready to smile as we reflect and remember their favorite destinations, tasty foods and see the holiday through their perspective.

  1. My Favorite Food in London was Paddington Marmalade. It was so delicious because it’s delicious on crumpets (softer then an English Muffin). I even got a book from Paddington Station that talks all about where Paddington went around London.

  2. We got to London we rode a subway and we ate burgers on the very first day. Plus we even played at a park in the middle of the city.

  3. The London Eye and Big Ben are both really cool (that’s what I wanted to see) but it was covered in scaffolding for repairs.

  4. Tower Bridge was really beautiful because it has towers and covered in sea blue and it’s over water. Did you know it’s an actually working Draw Bridge?! That same day I had a delicious smoothie from this Brazilian Sushi Place.

  5. I stayed at a castle called Woolley Grange while I was near Stonehenge. They had two bunnies, that was my favorite part!

  6. After seeing the movie, Kid who would be King, I was really excited to see Stonehenge. It was like a burial ground and I got to hear about a Stone Archer who was buried there. I even got a little stuffed lamb I named Lamby. He’s really cute.

  7. One of my favorite movies is “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” because they sing and dance on Portobello Road. So guess what, we got to go there and I even picked up a bedknob. There’s even a store that’s in the Paddington movie, “Mr. Gruber’s Antiques” that’s on Portobello Road, too.

  8. The Science Museum was really cool and filled with stuff to do. We went on a flight ride and expired. Then afterwards we went to the most amazing Science Themed Tea. It was A-MAZE-ING and we had to dress up fancy!!!

  9. I love the Cable Car because it went over the Thames River! It was really cool and very high up!

  10. Something that is really cool about London is the Double Decker Bus. It’s crazy to sit on the top of the bus. They also have a lot of cool and HUGE parks even in the middle of the city. They are really fun and pretty. There was an amazing rose garden that almost like a secret!

Watermelon Cherry Popsicles

Watermelon Cherry Popsicles

We found this fun knife at Lowes Food store.

We found this fun knife at Lowes Food store.

We are trying to beat the heat here in North Carolina. With the heat index well over 100, we decided some icy sweet treats sounded about right. Touring through Walmart last week the kids and I made an impulse buy for popsicle molds, 2 for $1.00. We figured, why not?! We then grabbed a few of our favorite fruits and decided to make a yummy frozen treat. Here’s our recipe for those looking for a processed sugar-free option:

  • 5-6 cups watermelon

  • 10 cherries pitted

  • 1 lemon juiced

  • 1 cup triple zero yogurt (we used vanilla)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • a dash of vanilla

Fill the blender with all of the above ingredients. Blend then place into molds and freeze overnight! Enjoy!

We had plenty of juice so we filled heart and square molds with the extra. 2 for $1.00 molds at Walmart.
